Reach Original Painting
24” x 30”
“Reach” is a mixed-media exploration of perspective, value, and the quiet dignity of simplicity. At the center of this work are two hands—one dainty and refined, the other rustic and weathered—both reaching for the same object. Once dismissed as the “cockroach of the sea,” lobster has transformed into a symbol of luxury and indulgence. This shift in perception mirrors how society often reassigns worth based on context, class, or fashion.
The hands represent more than physical form; they embody contrasting life experiences and worldviews. The delicate hand may come from a background where fine things are expected, while the rugged hand tells a story of work, of grounding, of living close to the land and sea. Yet both hands reach with equal intent, suggesting that longing, appreciation, and connection to beauty are universal—regardless of polish or provenance.
In creating this piece, I wanted to reflect on the pride that comes from choosing a provincial or humble life. In a world obsessed with upward mobility and aesthetic perfection, there’s radical power in embracing the simple, the unrefined, and the real. Lobster, in its journey from poor man’s meal to coveted delicacy, becomes a metaphor for reclaiming joy in what was once overlooked.
“Reach” asks the viewer to question how we assign value—to food, to labor, to lifestyle—and invites them to consider that fulfillment may not lie in aspiration, but in appreciation. This piece is a celebration of the tactile, the imperfect, and the beautiful honesty of choosing simplicity not as lack, but as a form of richness.
